Introducing Gridder 2: a maths arcade
Gridder 2 is an educational dexterity game that brings a little arcade chaos into exploring calculus. Guide Gridder around a coordinate grid, close loops to capture areas, and reveal the mathematical features hidden in each level. There are creatures to dodge, routes to plan and plenty of functions to explore along the way.
How to play
Choose a function and a difficulty, then guide Gridder along the grid lines. Close a loop and the enclosed area fills in. Capture the target rectangles to reveal the point or graph requested by the level. You'll need to plan your route and steer carefully while the creatures move around the board.
Each function brings its own family of monsters. There are also pools of water with leeches and a shark, as well as other creatures and surprises as you play. Gridder starts each function with seven lives; captured areas remain after a catch. You can turn the creatures off if you would like to concentrate on the mathematics.
Discover the mathematics
Depending on the function, levels invite you to find minima, maxima and inflection points, or reveal the first and second derivative, an inverse on a stated branch, and a normal line. Each mission has a clue above the board, so you can think about what you expect to find before tracing a route.
The mathematics panel explains the current case, including formulas, reasoning, interpretation and the relevant domain or branch. Complete a level to reveal its worked solution. You can float the panel to keep the explanation close while you play.
Make it your own
Use the keyboard arrow keys or the on-screen direction buttons to move, and press Escape to pause. The game has a full-screen button, movement settings, optional target hints, and separate controls for music and sound effects. Touch controls are available, and the mobile experience is still evolving.
